This is the latest coverage from Canada’s Globe and Mail:

1023 city shooting terrorism

THE SUSPECT:

— Michael Zehaf-Bibeau
32 years old
— Father is a Quebec businessman who appears to have fought in 2011 in Libya
— Mother is deputy chair of a division of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board
— Zehaf-Bibeau intended to travel to Libya and study Islam, but was unable to secure valid travel documents from federal officials
— Zehaf-Bibeau frequently talked about the presence of Shaytan, an Arabic term for devils, in the world, according to friend Dave Bathurst
— Mr. Bathurst suspected his friend “must have been mentally ill.”

Then, this morning’s editorial:

“We kind of like Canada the way it is. We suspect that you do too. … Canada is a place where the vast majority of public figures and even ministers of the Crown move about like normal citizens. Unlike the neighbors to the south, most of our government officials are not surrounded by phalanxes of armed guards. They are not riding in motorcades of black SUVs. They don’t usually have any police accompaniment at all, and they haven’t needed it.”

*This is Canada’s nightly national news broadcast, The National, which examines today’s attack on the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. Host Peter Mansbridge outlines what is known about the attack, whether it is connected with the terrorist attack in Montreal earlier in the week, and how Canadians are reacting. The program is about an hour.
