Mother Nature isn’t naughty or nice, in fact she simply goes about the business of earth irrespective of local impacts. Her changes always bring a new equilibrium to bear, although it might take an eon or two. So far she hasn’t shaken mankind off like she shed the dinosaurs, but who knows. In the span of this human life, some of her actions bring joy and hope. When the crocus laden with brilliant purple buds burst through northern snow-packed lands, spring is not far behind. Fireflies dancing with the reeds, over the lakes or in the forests ferns signal long summer nights filled with introspection and the ripening huckleberries mean pie. The first snowfall is always filled with beauty and the silence of a cycle completing itself. I wonder at what the old girl does to my world in the course of a year although I’m acutely aware that my existence is nothing to her.
Nature is awe-inspiring but individual engagement is on the human plane where mankind scraps to maintain the concept of Natural Law, the system of rights common to all humans and derived from nature rather than from the rules of a king, a society, or other individuals who ‘know best’. These are the issues to which we all contribute in many forums.
Caravan to Midnight, one such forum, has journeyed a full cycle. One year of overcoming odds, technical challenges, and waves of negatives designed to silence its voice deserves congratulation and honor. Thank you, CTM and Caravaners, for a voice calling people to action in a dark, bewildering wilderness. Individuals and groups of individuals can and do make a difference through actions and it is important to look back to see progress. Where have we been over the last year?
Eminent Domain, the government theft of your property so it can be given to someone else. In Philadelphia, artist James Dupree fought for his studio and won. “We are thrilled to announce that the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority (PRA) has decided to end condemnation proceedings to acquire James Dupree’s property by eminent domain, enabling James to keep his art studio!…” http://www.savedupreestudios.org/
Civil forfeiture, the sanctioned theft of your property by a government, is being beaten back one case at a time in spite of the Supreme Court’s complicity. “…Civil forfeiture allows law enforcement officials to take your money and property when you have done nothing wrong—and then pocket the proceeds. And nowhere is this happening more than in Philadelphia, which forces property owners into an automated, machine-like civil-forfeiture scheme. But a class-action lawsuit announced today by the Institute for Justice, a national civil liberties law firm, and a group of Philadelphians seeks to end the city’s particularly shocking system of seizing nearly $6 million in property from thousands of its citizens each year….” http://endforfeiture.com/federal-lawsuit-challenges-philadelphias-civil-forfeiture-machine/
First Amendment victories in Oregon and Missouri guarantee you can flash your brights to warn others that law enforcement is lurking (the government does want to control the number of breaths we take). Of course, the reasonable prohibitions still stand: no high beams or flashing lights in a manner that creates traffic hazards or blinds other drivers. http://landlinemedia.blogspot.com/2014/04/flashers-unite-first-amendment-defense.html
Voters are electing officials to state and local governments to take back local sovereignty. “…Wyoming officials are gearing up for a potential court battle against the Environmental Protection Agency as they try to reverse a sweeping agency ruling that transferred more than 1 million acres of land — including an entire city of 10,000 — to Native American tribes….” http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/02/12/wyoming-officials-prepare-for-court-fight-against-epa-ruling-that-gave-land-to/
No GMO, a battle cry in millions of homes, is making a difference one consumer at a time, but not how you think. No huge victories were claimed trying to force regulation. Instead, individuals flocked to the positive as they supported a group that certifies products free of GMOs. “In the battle surrounding GMO labeling, 2014 was a huge year. A measure was narrowly defeated in Oregon — and one resoundingly in Colorado — that would have required food makers to disclose if GMOs were included in the products they offer. But while all of the money and media attention has been turned toward whether or not the inclusion of GMOs should be highlighted, a different group that focuses on the exclusion of GMOs saw a rapid increase in sales of products it certified….” http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/02/07/gmo-labeling-these-numbers-will-astound-you.aspx
Good things are happening all over the land. The culture of our youth is besieged and struggling to survive. Each win that overcomes a fragment of the draconian socialist structure being imposed upon the citizens bestows brilliance to a firefly of freedom. No individual ‘win’ will illuminate the Land of the Free, but together they will lighten the future with an aura of hope.
Would that the concept of Natural Law were a force of nature instead of a conscious decision, but it is not. Keep listening, keep reading, and keep acting in your enlightened self-interest for you are winning a war against those who would be kings. Each ‘win’, each protest, each quiet demand for individual rights marks an advance. We could lose this war to become slaves of the state, but we won’t. It’s clear that rational individuals independently taking the next step forward will open the next road to freedom for future generations to pave.
Remember what Frédéric Bastiat said about life?
“We hold from God the gift which includes all others. This gift is life — physical, intellectual, and moral life.
But life cannot maintain itself alone. The Creator of life has entrusted us with the responsibility of preserving, developing, and perfecting it. In order that we may accomplish this, He has provided us with a collection of marvelous faculties. And He has put us in the midst of a variety of natural resources. By the application of our faculties to these natural resources we convert them into products, and use them. This process is necessary in order that life may run its appointed course.
Life, faculties, production — in other words, individuality, liberty, property — this is man. And in spite of the cunning of artful political leaders, these three gifts from God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it. Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place….” http://bastiat.org/en/the_law.html#SECTION_G003
