Thomas Coburn was a practicing physician in Oklahoma before election to the U.S. House (1995-2001) and Senate (2005-2014). Resigning from the Senate in December 2014, I serve as senior adviser to the Convention of States Project (under the aegis of Citizens for Self Governance) and as a consultant with the Manhattan Institute.
Book Summary (2-3 sentences): I saw firsthand how the extraconstitutional growth of the federal government has created a corrupted, dysfunctional political system in Washington, DC, that no longer acts in the best interests of the people. Giving up on the political class, I argue for an inherently safe Article V amendments convention as the best solution to propose constitutional change to limit the power and scope of the federal government. In addition to explaining why only an amendments convention can propose solutions to the nation’s current crisis, this work provides the historical background for the inclusion of Article V in the U.S. Constitution, the states’ past attempts to hold an amendments convention, the inherent safety of this process, and the current efforts since 2010.
