US air power revealed in fight against ISIS in Libya

By foxnews.com

The U.S. military launched jets from USS Wasp, a Navy amphibious assault ship off the coast of Libya yesterday, to conduct a portion of the airstrikes against ISIS targets in Sirte, Libya, multiple defense officials with knowledge of the operation told Fox News on Tuesday.

Marine Corps Harrier jets launched from Wasp conducted strikes Monday along with unmanned drones from a location the U.S. military did not want disclosed, one official said. The strikes targeted ISIS militants in their stronghold of Sirte, a Libyan coastal city.

In February, the U.S. military began flying armed drones over Libya from Sigonella, Italy, on the island of Sicily. Fox News is told the drones used in Monday’s ISIS strikes did not originate from Sicily, but likely from a drone base in Africa.

USS Wasp is the flagship of a flotilla of Navy ships carrying thousands of U.S. Marines, part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. They are expected to move from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf eventually.
